Petworth Cottage MuseumThe First Twenty YearsIn 2016 we were able to stage an exhibition to celebrate twenty years of the museum. Extracted from the Petworth Society's scrapbooks of cuttings, the pictures and transcripts collected here occupied three sides of the exhibition hall. Five years on we cannot stage another physical exhibition but we can show these cuttings here. Unless otherwise stated the cuttings are all from the Midhurst & Petworth Observer. A spare bedroom on the second floor, reached by a steep, narrow flight of stairs, is equipped with late Victorian furniture and adds another insight into the life of Mary Cummings and her family. Founder trustee of the High Street museum, Ann Bradley, said the decision to open the room followed a visit last year by Agnes Phelan, a friend of Mrs. Cummings's grandchildren who (with Agnes) stayed at the cottage in 1919. Mrs. Bradley said, “Mrs. Phelan confirmed this was the room they slept in. The staircase is very steep and is behind a door in the main bedroom. We have put in handrails to make it easier for people who want to go up there.” “It has the most magnificent view over Petworth”, she added. The cottage museum re-opened for the summer season yesterday (Wednesday) in line with Petworth House. Visitors can call in between 2 p.m. and 4.30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, weekends and Bank Holiday Mondays. For enquiries the telephone number is 01798 342100.
