Petworth Cottage Museum

The First Twenty Years

In 2016 we were able to stage an exhibition to celebrate twenty years of the museum. Extracted from the Petworth Society's scrapbooks of cuttings, the pictures and transcripts collected here occupied three sides of the exhibition hall. Five years on we cannot stage another physical exhibition but we can show these cuttings here. Unless otherwise stated the cuttings are all from the Midhurst & Petworth Observer. 4 Shop helps to secure museum's future - 13th Feb 1997

A charity shop has opened in Petworth to raise funds for the town's Cottage Museum. The museum trustees have been lent the former Corralls coal office premises in High Street, free of rent, by owner Mrs. Dod Bodley. And thanks to her generosity they are hoping to scoop several hundred pounds for the museum's endowment fund to secure its future. Trustee Ann Bradley, who has organised the venture, said, “We have the shop for two to three weeks initially. It opened last Wednesday and we are extremely pleased with the response and the voluntary help we are receiving to run it. We have also had a lot of support from local businesses with the things we need to run a shop like tables and clothes rails.” Callers can browse through and buy all sorts of items from household good to shoes, hats, clothes and children's toys, all of which have been donated. The High Street museum opened last year and attracted 2,500 visitors. The project aims to show how Petworth estate staff lived at the turn of the century. The cottage in which it is located was once occupied by Maria Cummings, seamstress at Petworth House. Mrs. Bradley said, “Admission fees are moderate at £1 for adults and 50p for children, and we need to do more fundraising to provide security for the museum's future.” The cottage will re-open to visitors at Easter. In the meantime an evening to promote it is being held at the Leconfield Hall, Petworth at 7.30 p.m. on March 13. Mrs. Bradley said, “It will be a free evening with a talk and an exhibition for anyone who wants to learn more about the project and what they can do to help.”
