Petworth Cottage Museum

The First Twenty Years

In 2016 we were able to stage an exhibition to celebrate twenty years of the museum. Extracted from the Petworth Society's scrapbooks of cuttings, the pictures and transcripts collected here occupied three sides of the exhibition hall. Five years on we cannot stage another physical exhibition but we can show these cuttings here. Unless otherwise stated the cuttings are all from the Midhurst & Petworth Observer. 9 Clock Takes Pride of Place - 30th September 1999

An early 19th Century longcase clock, retrieved from a house in Petworth, now has a place in the town's history. It has been presented to the Petworth Cottage Museum by the Friends group of the British Antique Dealers Association. The museum, in High Street, recreates the home environment of a seamstress at Petworth House at the end of the 19th (actually beginning of 20th) Century. The clock, which has a noteworthy floral dial, reached the museum after Petworth resident Brian Baskerville, a member of the Friends group, bought it when the owner died. Peter Jerrome, chairman of the museum trustees, said: “He then arranged for the Friends to buy it from him, for the museum. It replaces another more ornate clock, which was on loan from Brian Baskerville. It is in fact more suitable for the cottage because it is more unpretentious.” BBC television's Antiques Roadshow expert John Blyth was a guest at the presentation with local members of the British Antique Dealers Association.
