Petworth Cottage Museum

The First Twenty Years

In 2016 we were able to stage an exhibition to celebrate twenty years of the museum. Extracted from the Petworth Society's scrapbooks of cuttings, the pictures and transcripts collected here occupied three sides of the exhibition hall. Five years on we cannot stage another physical exhibition but we can show these cuttings here. Unless otherwise stated the cuttings are all from the Midhurst & Petworth Observer. 26 Mystery Jug on Display at Museum 20th March 2008

An unusual jug with a farming scene on one side and the other showing Napoleon Bonaparte hanging on a gibbet is causing a stir at Petworth Cottage Museum. The farming jug, as it is known, has recently been restored and according to Ann Bradley, a co-founder of the museum, it has created more than a little interest with its contrasting scenes. She is hoping TV expert Lars Tharp, a supporter of the museum, will take a look at the jug and give his verdict. Said Mrs. Bradley: “We have some unusual bits of ceramic in the museum which we have been given but this is different. No-one I have shown it to as yet has seen a farming jug with Napoleon on it. One side has the traditional 'God speed the plough' and all the implements concerned with the land and harvesting but on the back there is Napoleon strung up high in all his regalia with a group of onlookers beneath. I think it may date from the mid-19th century.” The jug has been restored because it had a large lump missing. It will be on show in the High Street cottage which replicates the early 20th century lifestyle of Petworth seamstress Mary Cummings. The museum is having a special early Easter opening from tomorrow until Easter Monday, from 2 to 4.30 pm daily. Admission is £2.50 for adults and 50p for children. It will be fully open from Tuesday, April 1st. Anyone who would like to volunteer as a steward is welcome to call in and find out more.
