Petworth Cottage Museum
The First Twenty Years
In 2016 we were able to stage an exhibition to celebrate twenty years of the museum. Extracted from the Petworth Society's scrapbooks of cuttings, the pictures and transcripts collected here occupied three sides of the exhibition hall. Five years on we cannot stage another physical exhibition but we can show these cuttings here. Unless otherwise stated the cuttings are all from the Midhurst & Petworth Observer. has been '1910 precisely' at Petworth Museum
for two decades

“At 346 it will be 1910 precisely” says the Petworth Museum leaflet. It's been 1910 at 346 High Street for 20 years now, and to celebrate an exhibition entitled '1910 Precisely' is being staged on Saturday, April 9, in the Leconfield Hall. On show will be objects from the collections, slide shows, visitors' comments, material illustrating life and events in 1910, and about 50 press cuttings from the Observer, charting the museum's development. Trustee chairman, Gordon Stevenson, said: “It will be a chance to show some of the reserve items and recently conserved textiles, including the Queen Victoria Diamond Jubilee cloth, that has been cleaned and mounted.” 346 was restored and furnished as the home of Mary Cummings, a seamstress who worked at Petworth House. Although there were no direct descendants of Mary alive in the 1990s, research led to the discovery of Agnes Phelan, a close friend of Mary's granddaughters. who had stayed in 346 in 1919. The exhibition will be open from 10am to 4pm and the museum will be open from 10am to 4.30pm. The exhibition is free. Normal entry charges apply to the museum.
