Petworth Cottage Museum

The First Twenty Years

In 2016 we were able to stage an exhibition to celebrate twenty years of the museum. Extracted from the Petworth Society's scrapbooks of cuttings, the pictures and transcripts collected here occupied three sides of the exhibition hall. Five years on we cannot stage another physical exhibition but we can show these cuttings here. Unless otherwise stated the cuttings are all from the Midhurst & Petworth Observer. 36 Petworth's Museum Stalwart Dies 6th November 2014

Petworth is mourning the death of Max Bradley, who played a pivotal role in the beginnings of the Petworth Cottage Museum. He died on Sunday, October 26 in St. Richard's Hospital, Chichester, with his wife Ann and his family by his side. Former chairman of the Cottage Museum Peter Jerrome said: “He was always cheerful, always helpful, never seeming out of sorts, Max was a real gentleman, a very ingenious man with a great interest in old gramophones and indeed anything similar of a mechanical nature.” Working in the back of the Past and Present shop in High Street, Max had a kind word for everyone and was always prepared to talk. When in the early 1990s Ann looked to found the Cottage Museum, while typically remaining on the sidelines, he was an abiding influence. His practical skills were invaluable and for years he was always first on call if help was needed. Mr. Jerrome added: “It is difficult to imagine the beginnings of the museum without him.” In the early months after the Leconfield estate handed over the keys to the cottage, and the trust was formed, there was little money to run the project. Max stepped into the breach and ran a series of antique fairs which provided the funds to get the museum on its feet. Max was also chairman of the Petworth and District Rifle Club for many years. His funeral, for family only, takes place at Chichester Crematorium. But there will be a celebration of his life in St. Mary's Church at 2pm today and those who attend are invited to join the family at The Angel from 3pm.
