Petworth Cottage MuseumThe First Twenty YearsIn 2016 we were able to stage an exhibition to celebrate twenty years of the museum. Extracted from the Petworth Society's scrapbooks of cuttings, the pictures and transcripts collected here occupied three sides of the exhibition hall. Five years on we cannot stage another physical exhibition but we can show these cuttings here. Unless otherwise stated the cuttings are all from the Midhurst & Petworth Observer. And to mark the opening, chairman of Petworth Society Peter Jerrome will show a series of slides of Petworth before 1914. Entitled Mary Cummings's Petworth, they paint a portrait of life in the town before the outbreak of the first world war. There is no charge for admission and everyone is welcome. The slide show takes place in United Reformed Church and everyone is welcome. [Well, no ... this was actually a museum Stewards and Friends event.]
The latest issue, number 155, of the Petworth Society Magazine is now available in the town. The cover of the new issue features George Stevens who lived in Northchapel and was a favourite subject of well-known Petworth photographer George Garland. The magazine is issued free to members. The latest edition contains a number of features and in his opening notes, Peter Jerrome says: “I am pleased to have 'old Petworth traders' making a reappearance.” But he has included four nature studies by Dan Smith in the central photographs; “I thought they'd brighten up the rather glum winter weather.” Membership for 2014-2015 can be renewed at the society's book sale in the Leconfield Hall, Petworth on Saturday from 10am-3pm and new members are welcome. Admission to the sale is free.
