Petworth Cottage MuseumThe First Twenty YearsIn 2016 we were able to stage an exhibition to celebrate twenty years of the museum. Extracted from the Petworth Society's scrapbooks of cuttings, the pictures and transcripts collected here occupied three sides of the exhibition hall. Five years on we cannot stage another physical exhibition but we can show these cuttings here. Unless otherwise stated the cuttings are all from the Midhurst & Petworth Observer. a Friend - and help preserve our history
Petworth's
Cottage Museum is looking for new friends. But it's a museum
that's not really a museum. It's a house that has been restored,
redecorated and furnished as if it were 1910, when it was the home
of Mrs. Mary Cummings. The
reconstruction takes account of living memories of Mary, her Irish
Catholic background and her work as a seamstress at home and at
Petworth House. Mary was the tenant of 346 High Street, Petworth
from 1901 to 1930. Number 346 is is one of the many Leconfield
Estate workers' cottages. When number 346 became vacant in 1993,
the idea of creating a reconstruction of a historic working class
home was accepted and actively supported by Lord and Lady Egremont
and the Petworth Cottage Museum was born. Since the museum first
opened to the public in 1996, it has been staffed by friendly
volunteer stewards, and run by the Petworth Cottage Trust, an
independent charity. The museum has always depended not only on
its admission charges but also on the support of the Friends of
the Museum. The museum is very grateful to all its Friends, and is
looking for more Friends. In return for an annual donation Friends
receive:- By donating a minimum of £10 per year you will be helping this independent charity maintain its unique experience of stepping back 100 years. If you would like to help the museum and enjoy these benefits, please complete the application form on the left and forward it to the Friends' secretary Yvonne Butterick at the address shown.
