Petworth Cottage Museum

The First Twenty Years

In 2016 we were able to stage an exhibition to celebrate twenty years of the museum. Extracted from the Petworth Society's scrapbooks of cuttings, the pictures and transcripts collected here occupied three sides of the exhibition hall. Five years on we cannot stage another physical exhibition but we can show these cuttings here. Unless otherwise stated the cuttings are all from the Midhurst & Petworth Observer. 20 Tours lead way to town's history 3rd August 2006

An initiative has started in Petworth to encourage more visitors into the town itself, to discover its fascinating history. While Petworth House has thousands of visitors each year, only a relatively small number find their way into the town to explore its narrow streets and see its ancient buildings. Now the Cottage Museum, which is marking its tenth anniversary this year, has introduce history tours for group bookings. Ann Bradley is a trustee of the museum, which is a tiny cottage in High Street where a seamstress at the great house used to live at the turn of the 20th century. Mrs. Bradley said: “On July 15 we welcomed Dorking History Group which numbered 33 people. We divided them and some visited the museum while Miles Costello gave the others a guided tour of the town for an hour. We then gave the walkers their tour of the museum while the others had their walk with Miles. This gave them two hours of Petworth and its history and was greatly enjoyed.” The party stayed in the town for lunch and then visited Coultershaw Mill and its historic beam pump, south of Petworth, as part of their trip. Total cost was £5 per person, not including their lunch or travel. The visits to both the museum and the mill were both outside normal opening hours and Mrs. Bradley said it was hoped more such tours would be organised for group bookings of 20 or more people. Further details are available from Mrs. Bradley on 01798 343590 or Michael Leathers, who is also a museum trustee, on 01798 342927.
