Petworth Cottage Museum

The First Twenty Years

In 2016 we were able to stage an exhibition to celebrate twenty years of the museum. Extracted from the Petworth Society's scrapbooks of cuttings, the pictures and transcripts collected here occupied three sides of the exhibition hall. Five years on we cannot stage another physical exhibition but we can show these cuttings here. Unless otherwise stated the cuttings are all from the Midhurst & Petworth Observer. 14 Cottage Museum makes it into Simon Jenkins' Book
6th May 2004

Petworth Cottage Museum has been described by Simon Jenkins in his book England's Thousand Best Houses as “ ... an immaculate portrayal of working class life in a settled small town before the Great War”. As you step into this Leconfield Estate Cottage you find yourself back in 1910. You will experience the unique atmosphere created by gas lighting and a coal-fired range. The parlour, scullery, cellar, bedroom, sewing room and tiny attic and are all furnished to show the domestic routine of Mary Cummings who lived in the cottage and worked as a seamstress for Lord Leconfield at Petworth House.
